Mother’s Day brunch
Where: Giraffe, Muswell Hill
When: Sunday
Seats: Full brunch £7.25
Get Sunday off to the right start with the ever-creative Giraffe on Muswell Hill Broadway (read our review) – it could be just the option for you and your mum this Mother’s Day. Children’s Book Fair
Where: HL&SI, Highgate
When: Sunday 10am to 1pm
Seats: £6 to £10
South Londoner Allan Ahlberg, the writer responsible for children classics like Burglar Bill, Please Mrs. Butler, and The Jolly Postman, will be in Highgate this weekend to appear at the Children’s Book Fair at the Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution (11, South Grove ). Ahlberg’s career path to writing was not a particularly smooth one, and he notched up jobs as a teacher, plumber and a soldier, before finding his way to being an author. On Saturday the book fair will be a chance for local youngsters to buy second hand books, sold by the Muswell Hill Children's Bookshop, and get involved in other activities like face-painting. Fans of Ahlberg should be at the fair by 11am, as the author will be on stage signing copies of his books. Pic courtesy of Ozyman.
The Wizard of Oz
Where: Curzon, Bloomsbury, WC1
When: Sunday 11.30am
Seats: Under-14 £3, adult £1
Not even that far ‘out of town’ this week, in fact this one is so close to north London that normally we wouldn’t feature it, but face it The Wizard of Oz isn't digitally restored and put on the big screen very often. The film begins in the dull world of Kansas but bursts into colour when Dorothy’s house, uprooted in a terrible tornado, lands in the surreal fairyland of Oz. Shortly the brainless Scarecrow (Bolger), the cowardly Lion (Lahr) and the heartless Tin Man (Haley) all turn up and Dorothy’s uttering the immortal words: “There’s no place like home”. Readers should note, Please Note: It is the law that no child under eight years may be left alone in a cinema. No adult unaccompanied by a child will be admitted to these screenings. Book tickets 0871 7033 991.
The Godfather trilogy
Where: Grand Union, Kentish Town
When: Sunday from 2pm
Seats: Free
The ‘trilogy season’ is in full flow at Kentish Town’s Grand Union bar (Highgate Road), and up this Sunday is the Gangster marathon The Godfather. Chances are you’ll have seen them all at some point, but if you, like us, believe them to be big screen classics, you won’t want to miss the chance to spend Sunday afternoon in the pub on a comfortable sofa watching all three. If you want to eat a roast (it just gets better…) while the films are being shown, you’ll have to book a table – 020 7485 1837.
The Joni Mitchell Project
Where: Green Note, Camden Town
When: Sunday 21 March
Seats: £8
This is an early heads-up for folk music fans, as singer songwriter Sally Barker is bringing her Joni Mitchell act to Camden Town’s Green Note next month. Barker has been performing Mitchell’s songs in their truest form for many years, and was even asked to perform Coyote as Mitchell in a tribute version of the Martin Scorsese music film The Last Waltz. But Barker has a music career of her own, as a solo artist (six albums) and with the all-female crossover-folk super group The Poozies (three albums), touring with Richard Thompson, Robert Plant and Bob Dylan. Sunday 21 Match, however, is for Joni Mitchell fans, so book up early online
