Peter the great!
A hat-trick from Peter Crouch, one each from Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane and some magnificent goalkeeping from Heurelho Gomes saw to it that we advanced to round four of the Carling Cup at Preston North End on Wednesday night.
The Championship side were defeated by a comfortable looking 5-1 margin, but it was not a routine exercise and Gomes was one of the stars of the night on his return to the side following his recovery from the groin injury sustained at Hull City in our second game of the season.
There was an early alert when a clearance from Gomes did not travel the required distance and Jon Parkin was able to take aim with the goalkeeper out of position - thankfully aiming wide.
Gomes was one of seven changes made to the starting line-up that took to the field at Chelsea on Sunday - with Gareth Bale and Michael Dawson making their first appearances of the season. A little rustiness was probably inevitable in the opening minutes after a period of matchday inactivity.
