New parking signs put a stop to illegal market parking

Special new signs are set to make parking around Swiss Cottage Market easier to understand and enforce, claim Camden Council.

The signs, which change depending on whether the market is open or closed, aim to stop the use of the pedestrian market area as a free car park.

Camden Council is installing the new signs - which have a motorised flip down plate to vary the message - in the pedestrian area of Eton Avenue, Swiss Cottage next week, and decided to use the changeable signs instead of putting down double yellow lines and installing multiple signs in order to preserve the clutter free look of the pedestrianised area.

To highlight the new signs and ensure motorists are not parking in the market area the council plans to continue to leaflet cars parked illegally and issue tickets where appropriate.

Councillor Chris Knight, executive member for environment, said: "We want to make sure residents and shoppers can enjoy and make full use of the pedestrianised market without the disruption and congestion of illegally parked cars.

“The new signs will make it as clear as possible that this is a car free zone and enable us to take enforcement action against those who park where they shouldn’t."

The new signs will replace the access bollard which provides a gateway to the market area - lowering to allow traders to load and unload on market days and giving access to the private car park behind 100 Avenue Road.

The bollard was installed as part of the creation of the pedestrian-friendly open space in front of the Hampstead Theatre in 2004, which has been well received by residents.

But the bollard has proved unreliable and without a current alternative method of parking enforcement the space is being used as a free car-park, which Camden now aims to stop with the new signs.
