North London Debating Society

North London Debating Society is holding its inaugural debate.

If you enjoy a good argument, meeting like-minded people prepared to speak their minds on issues they care about, and then heading off to the nearest pub afterwards, then join us at the Old Bank of England pub for the North London Debating Society's inaugural debate.

I am hoping to bring the society to Swiss Cottage -my own humble area- soon, but am holding the first debate in Central London to give as many people as possible an opportunity to make it to our opening night.

The society -which is on Facebook too- was set up to give people who long for the good old days of their university debating society (or who just want to learn more about public speaking) a place to go. Believe it or not there is no other group like this for anyone who isn't a student in the whole of London.

So, we have a private room booked for up to 40 people in the pub, which is based in Fleet Street. There is no minimum charge or anything, so you don't have to buy any food or drink unless you want to, but once the debate is over, we'll be in the best place for a good knees up afterward.

The motion has not yet been decided and I welcome any suggestions or requests especially if you would like to speak too.

So, please contact me if you'd like to come. You can just turn up too, but it would be good to know how many people are definitely coming because if it appears that only a few are interested, I'll probably have to cancel the booking.

This event is worth it for the pub alone.

All the best

Tony

  1. Dear Tony,

I read with interest your post about a north London debating society (a couple of years ago). How have you progressed with this, and have you ever thought about a debating society for teenagers? That's my particular interest so do let me know.

    Many thanks
    Yinka
